Equipment Suggestions According to German Standard DIN 18040-1
The aim of this standard is the accessibility of buildings so that they can be accessed barrier-free by people with disabilities, elderly people, and persons with small children, and can be used appropriately without external assistance.
DIN 18040-1 is limited to publicly accessible buildings, specifically to the parts of the building and the associated outdoor area intended for public use. These requirements apply in particular to cultural and educational institutions, office, administrative and court buildings, retail and catering establishments, parking spaces, garages, and toilet facilities.
DIN 18040-2 This part of the standard applies to the barrier-free planning of apartments, distinguishing between barrier-free and fully wheelchair-accessible apartments (R). The fact that accessibility means more than wheelchair usability is documented by the extended requirements regarding sensory and cognitive impairments. Also new is the obligation for retrofit capability in the sanitary area. Walls must be prepared for the subsequent installation of grab rails. This must already be taken into account during the planning and execution phase. Adaptability to changing needs characterizes "Barrier-Free Concepts".
